Houston Sets the Standard: Black In HR Launches Its First-Ever Chapter with a Secret Dinner

Updated: Feb 2

Black In HR made history in Houston.

In an intimate, invitation-only Secret Dinner, Black HR professionals from across the city gathered to celebrate the official launch of the Houston Chapter of Black In HR, marking the very first chapter in the organization’s history. The evening was equal parts elegant, intentional, and powerful, setting the tone for what local community building in HR can and should look like.

This wasn’t just a dinner. It was a declaration.

“For Houston to be the first chapter means everything,” said Jess Duckett, Chapter President of Black In HR Houston. “Houston is full of brilliant Black HR leaders who’ve been doing the work quietly for years. This chapter creates a home where our voices, our growth, and our leadership are centered on purpose.”

The Secret Dinner brought together senior HR leaders, rising professionals, entrepreneurs, and allies for real conversation about career mobility, leadership visibility, and economic advancement in HR. Guests connected over curated courses, meaningful dialogue, and a shared belief that Black HR professionals deserve more access, more opportunity, and more ownership of their careers.

Crystal Murphy, Vice President of the Houston Chapter, emphasized that the chapter is about action, not optics.

“This chapter isn’t about titles or networking for the sake of networking,” Murphy shared. “It’s about making sure Black HR professionals in Houston have real resources, real mentorship, and real pathways to six-figure careers and beyond. We’re building something sustainable, not symbolic.”

The dinner was hosted by Ciera Parks, who helped bring the vision to life through a warm, elevated experience that reflected the caliber of the community in the room.

“This dinner was about intention,” Parks said. “We wanted people to feel seen the moment they walked in. Black In HR is about excellence, and Houston showed up ready to embody that from day one.”

Throughout the evening, guests discussed the future of work, the evolving role of HR, and the importance of having spaces where Black professionals can speak freely about workplace realities without code-switching or shrinking themselves. There was laughter, strategy sharing, and a clear sense that this was the beginning of something much bigger than one night.

The Houston Chapter launch signals a new chapter for Black In HR as a national organization. While the community has long supported professionals through digital programming, certifications, and national events, local chapters create deeper relationships and localized impact.

Houston is setting the blueprint.

With leadership committed to professional development, career acceleration, and community care, the Houston Chapter will host future learning sessions, networking experiences, and curated gatherings designed to help members grow into Generalists, Business Partners, People Leaders, and Executives.

This momentum is just getting started.

Black HR professionals who want access to exclusive chapter events, certification bootcamps, career tools, and a national network of peers are encouraged to join the Black In HR membership. Membership connects you to both the national community and your local chapter, ensuring you are plugged in wherever you live and wherever your career is headed.

And Houston won’t be standing alone for long.

Black In HR is excited to announce that Dallas will be launching as the second official chapter, with a launch party scheduled for February 26, 2026. The expansion reflects the growing demand for local spaces where Black HR professionals can connect, learn, and lead together.

More chapters are coming. But Houston will always be first.

What started as a Secret Dinner has become a movement. And Black In HR chapters are just getting warmed up.
